Tuesday, December 7
I. Bell Ringer:
As a group, look at each of the three paragraphs posted (document below) What is the topic sentence? Highlight the topic sentence.
Share answers to BR – discuss placement of topic sentence. Review idea of stated versus implied topic sentence.
First we, looked at the paragraphs and picked a topic sentence. Then the hint handout was shared, we made adjustments. Lastly, we went over the paragraphs and discussed how the format changed because of the movement of the topic sentence.

II. Lesson on Focus
FLIP CHART: Focus
  • What do you do when you concentrate?
  • Writers concentrate- or focus – on what they are writing. They try to keep all of their writing on one topic. They do not want unnecessary information or details to distract the reader from what they are trying to say.
  • A strong piece of writing focuses on one topic, providing appropriate development and details to support the topic.
  • Focused writers know their purpose, audience, and content for a specific piece.
  • Prewriting – a writing plan – helps writers remain focused by giving them a point of reference during the writing process. It is easier to maintain focus if you know where you are going (brainstorming/webbing versus freewriting)
III. Focus practice
Use think aloud model paragraph.

III. Homework : Using the tbreak paragraph you wrote on Google Docs (see Tuesday, November 30 for this task - writing about length of break), check your paragraph for focus. Use insert comment button on Google Docs and address every sentence by asking if the sentence ties back to the topic sentence - this is explained on edmodo as well.

Friday, December 10

Bell Ringer: Complete on Google Docs
  • Title it: Last Name First Initial CA 8.1 MySpace Progress
  • Set it up as a Type I

Yesterday, you watched video clips from Toy Story. Then viewed a model chart. Although we have done extensive practice with inference cues and character trait, we wanted to make sure you could see how this could lead to creating your own cues -pull out what was there and create accurate inference cues based on that. Did yesterday’s model help you with your chart? If so, how? If not, why not? Include any questions or concerns you have at this point. (minimum 3 lines – 4 minutes)
Share with me – remember to unclick send email notification.

Focus Activity in Groups of 2 - make ups will occur next week in FLEX.
